BGU withdrawal from IPT Tournaments - clubs will benefit

- 20 May 2020

Message to all golfers and clubs from the Director of Golf, Boland Golf Union, Abrie Swanepoel.

Dear Golfers

BGU withdrawal from 2020 IPT Tournaments

I am sure you are all eagerly waiting for the green light to get back on our beautiful courses and enjoy this wonderful game. As you are aware, most golf courses are under minimum maintenance ensuring we all have a playable course to come back to! This and many other overheads without any income through greenfees or catering facilities places huge financial stress on clubs.
For this reason, the Boland Golf Union created a R500 000 Relief Fund in early April to help clubs through this uncertain time. Unfortunately, a month later and we still have no clarity on what the immediate future holds for our clubs.
The BGU Executive met on the 18th of May and resolved to withdraw from all planned IPT’s for the remainder of 2020.
This will entail the following tournaments:
• • SA Interprovincial Championship 14-18 September 2020
• • NOMADS SA U13 Championship 23-25 September 2020
• • SA Mid-Amateur Interprovincial Championship 5-9 October 2020
• • SA Junior Interprovincial Championship 7-11 December 2020

This decision allows us to provide additional relief funding to our clubs in these trying times.
The Executive hopes that our elite golfers will understand that in these unprecedented times it is crucial to keep our courses open for you and other golfers to enjoy at a later stage.
Limited funding has been set aside for a possible “BGU Inter-Union Challenge”, should this be feasible.
We will keep you updated as we get more clarity on the playing of golf.
Regarding the current Order of Merits, selection criteria and counting tournaments. These have been placed on hold and decision will be made on the way forward once we have more clarity.
Do not hesitate to contact me with any questions you might have.

Kind regards
Abrie Swanepoel
