The first BGU Open Tournament after Covid-19 lockdown was played today at Pearl Valley and local boy Liam Millard was the winner after a close battle with Ethan Smith (Paarl).
The weather was great; the condition of the course top-class and the speedy (but true) greens were a stern test for the players.
Millard’s winning score was 70. He had a solid first 9 holes scoring 35 and followed it up with another 35. In total he made 6 birdies – including three in a row (14th, 15th and 16th).
Smith got off to a slow start and was 4 over par (40) after 9 holes. But the Boland IPT-player then got going on the 2nd nine and with 5 birdies and no drops he came in with 31 – an astonishing score from the championship tees at Pearl Valley!
Chrismar Engelbrecht (De Zalze), Donovan Liddicoat (Stellenbosch) and LB Boshoff (Arabella) were joint 3rd on 74.
Top SA amateur Megan Streicher (Swellendam) was the winner of the Ladies division with a score of 78.
Bianca Lohbauer (Paarl) was the runner-up with 79, whilst Vanessa Smith (Paarl) also had a solid round of 80 for 3rd place.
The ladies played off the blue tees (club tees for men), whilst the men played off the championship tees (yellow).
In total 80 players were in action – including 8 women.
The event created huge interest and in total 142 entries were received.
