Golf runs in the Williams family of Stellenbosch. Clive Williams not only was selected for the Boland Senior Team, but also was named as captain. His daughter Cassidy plays professional golf at the Sunshine Series for women, and has also been club champion of the women's division at the Stellenbosch club.
Below, Clive answers a few questions about himself.
QUESTION: How old are you?
WILLIAMS: I'm 51 years old.
QUESTION: How old were you when you started playing golf?
WILLIAMS: I was 25 years old.
QUESTION: How did it come about that you started playing golf?
WILLIAMS: My late cousin, Brian Davidse, introduced me to golf, and encouraged me to take up the game. (Brian’s son Keanan has been playing successfully on the Sunshine Series as a professional player for several years)
QUESTION: Did you ever get coaching in the beginning or did you just teach yourself?
WILLIAMS: I received the basic coaching from Brian, and also received formal coaching from Mervin Galant who was a professional coach at Vodacom Village in Somerset West.
QUESTION: Which club did you join as a golfer?
WILLIAMS: Somerset West was my first club because they had special rates for cops, army members and clergy. I was 26 years old.
QUESTION: Since when have you been a member of Stellenbosch Club?
WILLIAMS: Since 2018.
QUESTION: What do you consider to be the highlights of your golf career?
WILLIAMS: The fact that I qualified to make the Boland senior team. I have achieved this by playing a consistent level of golf in recent tournaments.
QUESTION: What are the strengths of your game in golf?
WILLIAMS: My driving game and short game, although I'm struggling a bit now with my putting.
QUESTION: With what equipment do you play?
WILLIAMS: Driver: TaylorMade M6; Fairway-wood: TaylorMade M1, 3-wood; Titleist TS 2, 5-wood; hybrid: Titleist TS2, 21 degrees; irons: Titleist T100 5-pw; wedges: Titleist Vokey SM6 50, SM7 54, SM8 58; putter: TaylorMade Spider.
QUESTION: How do you feel about being named captain of the Boland team?
WILLIAMS: It is a great privilege and honour for me. I was quite emotional when I was asked to be captain of the team, because we have such strong players and quality men to serve as captain. My goal was just to make the team, so it's special for me to be named captain.
QUESTION: What are your plans regarding preparation for the SAIPT tournament?
WILLIAMS: Our main goal as a team is to first create a good camaraderie and team culture of unity. We are planning a few team building sessions and will also play together a few times beforehand so that we can sort out the “pairings” for the tournament early.
QUESTION: Do you currently have someone to help you with your swing?
WILLIAMS: No, I'm doing it myself. My daughter Cassidy keeps such an eye on me, but nothing serious. I'm just trying to keep it simple for now.
(The IPT for seniors will be take place from 4th April to 8th of April at Heron Banks GC, Free State).
